TWENTY-ONE

GARRISON

“Hell yeah!” I’m pumped as we go back into the locker room after the game. I love when we win. I love it even more when we win at homecoming. It’s a big deal here. The businesses in town decorate with our school colors. The entire town comes to the game—which isn’t that different from every game—but even people who moved away come back for it.

It’s fun, and we kicked some serious ass tonight. And Bates and I were in sync out on that field like we’ve never been before. It was beautiful. “One hell of a game, boys.” Coach actually has a smile on his face when he walks into the locker room.

That’s how well we played.

The other guys shout, and I catch Jameson’s eyes as he yanks his pads off along with the rest of his uniform.

Try not to drool, I tell myself as I make it over to my locker. Getting a hard-on in the locker room after staring at a nearly-naked Jameson Bates is probably not the best idea. We all quickly shower and dress for the dance. Bates is wearing slacks and a button-down shirt I really want to rip open, but I resist.

I head to the dance with Oakley. I don’t know how Bates got there, but he’s all I can think about as I dance with a couple of girls from our class. He does too, I notice, including with his ex, Becky. And I feel my hackles rise, just like they did when Travis was touching him, especially because I know he was once attracted to her.

Jesus, I really need to get a grip. I hate that I can’t stop thinking about him, his dark hair all slicked back and his expression serious. He does it for me. I want him in ways I’ve never really experienced before.

When we get out to Oakley’s later, most of us have changed into more comfortable clothes, and we sit around the fire, drinking and talking about the game. But my mind is on Bates and about getting him back to my room. I rode with Oakley, though, so I’m going to have to catch a ride with Jameson.

I don’t think he’ll mind.

I’m sure some people find it suspicious that we don’t get into it as much as we used to, but I still give him a hard time, and he gives it right back, so not much has changed.

When I go take a piss away from everyone else, I’m shocked as hell to feel Bates’s body behind mine, his hands on my hips as I zip up. “This might look suspicious.”

“Why? You caught me out here once, remember?”

I smile at the memory. It feels like a lifetime ago, but it wasn’t. I never thought I’d be so happy to stumble onto two people making out before. “I did. What are you doing out here now?”

He licks his lips, tossing a quick glance over his shoulder toward the bonfire and then taking my hand, pulling me further away from the party.
